They are one and the same and have the species name, Juniperus Virgiania. This cedar should not be confused with western red cedar which is a completely different species. Aromatic red cedar heartwood is a beautiful pink which ages to reddish brown. The creamy white sapwood turns tan as time goes by.
To get a first hand look at some eastern red cedar wood, visit a Wal-mart and head to the pet section. The Cedarworks display of birdhouses and birdfeeders will show the great character of this fine wood. A sniff test will reward you with a fine aroma. That is why it makes great cedar chests and closet lining.
